Abergele is a market town that is situated between Colwyn Bay and Rhyl on the Irish Sea coast of Wales.
Aber is the Welsh word for estuary or river mouth and Gele is the name of the river that flows through the town.
The town is surrounded by woodland-covered hillsides. Inside those are located caves in which colonies of the rare lesser horseshoe bat live.
There are beautiful views from Cefn-yr-Ogof (669ft), Tower Hill (587ft) and Castell Cawr (locally known as Tan y Gopa, 620ft).
Abergele was the site of an important Celtic monastery and Edward I is said to have stayed there in December 1294 when he came to Wales to suppress the revolt of Madog ap Llywelyn.
Other sites of historical interest are:
- Castell Cawr, an Iron Age hillfort
- Dinorben, another Iron Age hillfort
- a 17th-century windmill, partially restored in 1930.
Gwrych Castle was the residence of the Dundonald family. The condition of the property is currently being monitored by the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust. In 2020 and 2021, "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" was filmed there. It also the location for the 1996 film Prince Valiant, starring Katherine Heigl and Edward Fox.
Welsh footballer David Vaughan was born in Abergele.
Abergele boasts a beautiful 18 hole golf course and a plethora of sports clubs including Abergele FC, Abergele Rugby Club, Abergele Community Netball Club, Abergele Bowling Club and Abergele Cricket Club.
Abergele has one OFSTED rated outstanding junior school, two junior schools rated good and one secondary school rated good
