South of the seaside town of Rhyl is Rhuddlan. The name comes from the Welsh words for 'red riverbank'. An ancient place, it was recorded in the Domesday Book.

Rhuddlan Castle is a famous landmark. It was built from 1277 to 1282, during the reign of King Edward I. Remarkably well-preserved, the castle is a popular place to visit and with the river nearby, little ones can enjoy feeding the geese and swans.

The town itself is beautiful and the mediaeval street plan has changed little since King Edward's time. Walk a little further and you'll reach Rhuddlan Nature Reserve for even more ornithological opportunities. If you like a good walk with a ball and special trousers, visit Rhuddlan Golf Course.
